Deck or Paver Patio Off the Back Door? Picking the Right One for Your Vero Beach Lot
Start Your Transformation
How your door height, the slope of the yard, Vero's rain, and the upkeep you'll actually do decide between a raised deck and a paver patio, from the mainland neighborhoods to the barrier island.
Quick Answer:
Let the back door decide first. If your slider sits close to the lawn and the yard is fairly flat, a paver patio laid at grade is usually the cleaner fit. If the door sits high, the yard slopes away, or the ground stays soggy after a summer storm, a raised wood or composite deck makes more sense. Plenty of Vero Beach lots end up with both: a deck at the door that steps down to a paver patio.

The Back Door Decides First
Start with a tape measure at the back door, not a picture of the finished space.
What the door height tells you:
- A step or less above the lawn. A paver patio sits right at that level. You walk out flat, with no stairs and no railings.
- Two or more steps up. A patio would need fill, a retaining edge, or steps down from the door. A deck meets the door where it is.
Florida's residential code keeps an outdoor landing no more than 7¾ inches below the door threshold (R311.3). A deck gets built to that number. A patio has to be graded up to it.
Height also changes what a deck needs. Once the walking surface is more than 30 inches above grade, guards are required (R312.1.1). Stairs follow the code's riser and tread limits, with a handrail once there are four or more risers.
What Your Lot Is Telling You
After the door, walk the yard after a heavy afternoon rain. Vero's sandy soil drains fast in most spots, but not all of them.
What to look for:
- Slope away from the house. A gentle fall suits a patio. A steep one means fill and retaining work for pavers, while a deck just uses taller posts.
- Standing water. A patio has to be pitched so water runs away from the house, never toward the slab. A deck lets rain fall through to the ground underneath.
- Trees and roots. Roots can lift pavers over time. Deck footings can be placed between the big roots.
- The septic drainfield. Many Indian River County homes are on septic. Neither a patio nor deck footings belong over the drainfield, so we locate it first.
- Buried lines and the AC pad. Footings and patio edges both have to clear them.
If drainage is already a problem by the door, our guide to solving patio drainage with paver design walks through the fixes.
How Each One Handles Vero Weather
Both hold up to Vero's sun and storms when they're built right.
How they compare:
- Heat underfoot. Pavers in light colors stay more comfortable on bare feet; see the best paver colors for the Florida sun. Wood and composite heat differently, covered in wood vs. composite decking in Florida.
- Wind. A patio sits on the ground and has nothing to catch the wind. A deck is a structure, so it's built with posts, beams, and connections sized for the load.
- Moisture. A wood deck in humid air needs lumber rated for its exposure; see pressure-treated lumber grades for a Vero Beach deck.
- Flood zone. On the barrier island, across the Merrill Barber or 17th Street bridge, check your FEMA flood zone before you design anything. It can shape both the height and the permit.
Upkeep: Boards vs. Pavers
Be honest about how much weekend work you'll do.
What each one asks of you:
- Paver patio. Sweep it, rinse it, and top up joint sand when it washes low. Sealing is optional but helps with stains; see sealing pavers: when and what to expect.
- Wood deck. Wash it, then restain or reseal on a schedule. Our guide to wood deck upkeep in Sebastian salt air covers the routine.
- Composite deck. No staining. TimberTech, AZEK, Deckorators, and Trex each publish their own cleaning guidance; see capped composite vs. PVC decking.
A loose paver can be lifted and reset in place. A soft board gets replaced. Either repair is small when it's caught early.
Permits, the Build, and What Moves the Cost
A deck off the house is a permitted structure, attached on a ledger or freestanding on its own posts. We build both and pull the permit on both. The City of Vero Beach handles addresses inside city limits; the Indian River County Building Division handles unincorporated ones.
How each build goes:
- Deck. Footings, posts, framing, then high-moisture-resistant pressure-treated wood decking or TimberTech, AZEK, Deckorators, or Trex composite. Once the permit is approved, it's built by our own crew in 1–2 weeks.
- Paver patio. Excavation, a compacted base, bedding, then pavers, edge restraint, and joint sand. Our in-house licensed mason runs the work. We confirm with your building office whether your patio scope needs a permit.
For the deck-side choice, see attached vs. freestanding decks on a block house.
What moves the number on a deck: size, height, footing count, wood or composite, stairs and guards. On a patio: size, how much fill and grading the yard needs, paver style, borders, and drainage work. We price it on-site and you get a real number at the consultation.
When the Answer Is Both
Some lots want a deck at the door and a patio below it. That's common when the door sits high but you also want a flat space for a table or fire pit.
How the combination usually works:
- A small deck landing at the door at the right height, with code-sized stairs.
- A paver patio at the foot of the stairs , at grade, for the bigger gathering space.
- A paver walkway tying it to the side yard; see designing paver walkways and garden borders.
Because one crew builds both, the stairs land where the patio starts, with no second contractor to schedule.
📌 The Five-Minute Lot Test
- Measure from the top of the door threshold to the lawn
- Look for standing water by the door after a heavy rain
- Note the slope: flat, gentle, or steep away from the house
- Find the septic drainfield, the AC pad, and any cleanouts
- Check for big tree roots near the planned spot
- On the barrier island, look up your FEMA flood zone
FAQs
Is a deck or a paver patio better off the back door in Vero Beach?
A paver patio, if your door sits within a step of the lawn and the yard is flat. A deck, if the door is high, the yard slopes, or water sits by the house after storms. Many Vero Beach lots on the mainland and the barrier island fit one clearly. We build both, so we'll tell you which.
Can you build a paver patio on a sloped yard in Vero Beach?
Yes, but a slope means fill, compaction, and often a retaining edge to bring the patio level with the door, and the surface still has to pitch water away from the house. On a steep Vero Beach yard, a raised deck on posts is often the simpler build. Our licensed mason and deck crew can price both.
Which needs more upkeep, a wood deck or a paver patio?
A wood deck, in most Vero Beach yards. Wood needs washing and a restain or reseal on a schedule in humid salt air, while pavers mostly need sweeping and a joint-sand top-up. Composite decking from TimberTech, AZEK, Deckorators, or Trex skips the staining. We'll match the material to the upkeep you'll actually do.
Can you put a deck and a paver patio together?
Yes. A common Vero Beach layout puts a small deck landing at a high back door, with code-sized stairs down to a paver patio at grade for the table or fire pit. Building both with one crew means the stairs land exactly where the patio starts. We design and build the whole thing under one contract.
One Crew, Either Way
The right answer is the one your door, your yard, and your weekends agree on.
We build house decks under our state-certified carpentry license, with a 2-year workmanship warranty separate from any manufacturer warranty, and paver patios with our in-house licensed mason. From the mainland neighborhoods off 43rd Avenue to the barrier island, it's the same crew and the same standard.
