Wood Deck Installation

Here's what nobody tells you when you buy an above-ground pool: the pool is the easy part. From delivery to first swim in under 7 days. But without a deck, you've got a ladder, a patch of wet grass, and kids tracking sand into the liner all summer. The deck is what turns it into a place your family actually lives.

We build custom wood and composite pool decks with our own decking crew, across the Treasure Coast, the Space Coast, Volusia, and Greater Orlando. Real footings, framing sized for the span, boards height-matched to your pool's top rail so there's no awkward step. Done right, a deck brings the pool up to floor level, gives you a real edge to sit on, hides the pump and plumbing, and makes an above-ground pool read as built-in — not dropped in.

Why a Deck Changes Everything About an Above-Ground Pool

It's the part you actually use. The water is where the kids are. The deck is where everyone else is — the chairs, the towels, the drink you set down. A pool without a deck gets used in July. A pool with one gets used every weekend from March to November.

It fixes a bad yard. Sloped lot? A raised deck is usually cheaper and faster than trucking in fill and regrading. We set footings to the existing grade and frame level from there, and you get usable storage or pump access underneath.

It makes the pool safer for small kids. A wobbling ladder is the thing every parent of a four-year-old worries about. A deck at top-rail height with a proper rail, stairs, and a self-closing gate replaces it with something you don't have to think about.

It's built for the Florida climate. Pressure-treated lumber rated for ground contact, or premium composite that never needs sealing. On the barrier island and along the Indian River Lagoon, salt air shortens the re-seal interval — we spec the material and the schedule to where your house actually sits.

How a Wood Pool Deck Install Works

  1. Design Consultation — We come out, measure the yard, check the slope, and lay out the deck around how you'll actually use it. Full wrap, three-quarter wrap, or a landing and stairs. Straight answers, no pressure.
  2. Permitting & HOA — A raised deck at a pool is a structure, and Florida's Residential Swimming Pool Safety Act (Statute 515) sets barrier and access rules it has to meet. In master-planned neighborhoods the HOA architectural committee wants a drawing before anybody digs — that's a Chapter 720 review, and it runs on its own clock. We handle both.
  3. Footings & Structure — The part you'll never see and the part that decides whether your deck is still solid in ten years. Real footings, properly set posts, framing sized for the span. Not a deck floating on patio blocks.
  4. Decking & Rails — Boards go down flat and true, height-matched to the pool's top rail so the transition sits flush. Rails, stairs, and a gate where the code and your kids require one.
  5. Finish & Detail Work — Skirting to close in the underside, a hatch for pump access, and a sealed, sanded surface that won't shred bare feet.
  6. Inspection & Walkthrough — We schedule it, we meet the inspector, and we walk you through care and sealing before we hand it over.
Most pool decks add 1 to 2 weeks on top of the pool install.

Is a Wood Deck Right for You?

A wood pool deck makes sense if you:

  •  Have — or are getting — an above-ground pool and want it to look finished
  • Want the pool usable for young kids without a wobbling ladder
  • Have a sloped, rocky, or uneven yard where a raised structure solves the grade
  • Want the pool, the deck, and the screen quoted and built by one crew
  • Are planning the higher end of an above-ground budget — a substantial deck is what moves a project up that range

You probably want pavers, travertine, or decorative concrete instead if you:

  •  Are putting in a fiberglass or custom concrete pool — those pair with hardscape, not raised decking
  • Want a ground-level poolscape rather than a raised deck
  • Want the surround laid by our in-house licensed mason, one of the few on the Treasure Coast

If that sounds more like your build, start with our Fiberglass Pool Installation or Pavers & Hardscapes pages. If you're still deciding on the pool itself, our Above-Ground Pool Installation page covers the pool side of the same build.

The Deck Is the First Thing People Cut. It Shouldn't Be.

We see it every season. A family prices the pool and the deck together, the number lands higher than they pictured, and the deck is what gets dropped to make it work. Then they spend two summers climbing a ladder into a pool that never quite looks finished, and call us back to build the deck anyway — at a second mobilization, on a second permit.

Financing is what stops that. Pool and deck on one loan is a smaller monthly number than most people assume, and it's usually the difference between the build you actually wanted and the stripped-down version you settle for. HFS Financial is where most of these land — longer terms and lower rates than a short-term loan on the same job. If your credit isn't where you'd like it yet, Foundation Finance is the backup: shorter terms and a higher rate, but they approve scores other lenders won't.

📌 What Checking Your Options Actually Involves

  •  About a minute to see if you prequalify
  • Soft credit pull — no hit to your score
  • Full terms back inside 24 hours
  • No obligation, no deposit to find out

Pool, deck, pavers and lighting can all ride on the same loan — one payment and one timeline instead of separate bills from separate contractors. Current terms for every lender we work with are on our financing page.

Proudly Serving Central and the East Coast of Florida

The right deck changes with where you are. Out on the barrier island off A1A and along the Indian River Lagoon, salt in the air is working on every fastener from day one, so hardware spec and sealing schedule matter more than they do inland — a deck in Vero Beach shoreside needs a shorter re-seal interval than the same deck four miles west. Off Malabar Road in Palm Bay, the quarter-acre lots give you room for a full wrap that a zero-lot-line yard can't take. Out in St. Lucie West, Tradition, and the master-planned neighborhoods off SR 417, the bigger issues are sandy-to-clay soil that moves under a footing and an architectural committee that wants a drawing before anybody digs. We build for the yard we're standing in.

FAQs

  • How long does it take to build a wood deck around a pool?

Most pool decks take 1 to 2 weeks once permits are approved, and we build them right behind the pool install. Because our own decking crew does the work instead of a subcontractor, there's no gap between your pool being ready and your deck being finished.

  • Do I need a permit for a deck around my pool in Florida?

es, in almost every case. A raised deck at a pool is a structure, and Florida's Residential Swimming Pool Safety Act (Statute 515) sets barrier and access rules your deck has to meet. We pull the permits, schedule the inspections, and confirm requirements with your City or County building department.

  • What kind of wood holds up around a Florida pool?

Pressure-treated lumber rated for ground contact, sealed on a regular schedule, is the standard and it performs well here. Near the coast, sun and salt air shorten the interval between re-sealings. We also stain/seal the deck 30 days after installation that makes the deck last much longer.

  • Will a wood deck work on a sloped or uneven backyard?

Yes, a raised deck is often the best answer to a bad grade. Instead of trucking in fill and regrading half the yard, we set footings to the existing slope and frame level from there. It solves the grade and gives you usable storage or pump access underneath.
